Compress to an exact file size
Most upload limits are expressed in megabytes: 20 MB for a free Discord account, 25 MB for an email attachment, 100 MB for some forms. Instead of guessing a quality slider, tell Vidmini the size you need. It measures the length of your video, works out the bitrate that fits the budget and keeps a safety margin for the container. If the first pass still overshoots, it runs one corrective pass automatically.
When the budget is tight, Vidmini also lowers the resolution for you. A 1080p video squeezed into a few megabytes looks blocky; the same bits spent on 720p or 480p look clean. You can also set a maximum resolution yourself.
Private by design: your video stays on your device
Online compressors usually upload your file to a server, process it there and let you download the result. That means waiting for the upload, trusting a third party with your footage and, often, accepting a watermark or a size cap.
Vidmini works differently. The compression runs inside your browser, using the WebCodecs API and the hardware video encoder of your device. The page is not allowed to send your file anywhere, and you can check it: load the page, turn off your connection, and compress a video. It still works.
What happens to quality?
Compression always trades file size for detail. Vidmini encodes to H.264 in an MP4 container, the format that plays everywhere: phones, browsers, TVs, WhatsApp, Discord and every video editor. The audio is re-encoded to AAC at a bitrate that fits the budget, between 64 and 128 kbps.
For the best result, trim the parts you don't need first: a shorter video leaves more bits for every second you keep. You can chain the tools, so trimming and then compressing takes a few clicks and no re-upload.
Large files and phones
There is no size limit set by us. The output is streamed to your browser's private storage, so desktop browsers handle videos of several gigabytes. On phones the practical limit depends on free memory and storage; a few hundred megabytes is usually fine.
Speed depends on your device. With hardware encoding, a modern laptop compresses a few minutes of 1080p video in well under a minute.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a video without losing quality?
Some quality loss is unavoidable when you shrink a video a lot, but it is rarely visible at sensible targets. Pick the "Quality" mode with "High quality", or set a target size around half of the original. Lowering the resolution to 1080p or 720p also saves a lot of space with little visible difference on phones.
Is there a file size limit?
We don't impose one. Processing happens on your device and the result is written to your browser's private storage, so multi-gigabyte files work on desktop computers. Phones are limited by their free memory and storage.
Will my video have a watermark?
No. Vidmini never adds a watermark, logo or intro, and there is no paid version needed to remove one.
Which formats can I compress?
MP4, MOV (including iPhone videos), WebM, MKV and M4V files with common codecs such as H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1, as long as your browser can decode them. The result is an MP4 file with H.264 video, which plays everywhere.
Why is my compressed file slightly different from the target size?
Encoders can only approximate a bitrate. Vidmini aims a few percent below your target and runs a second pass if the first result is too large, so the file ends up at or just under the size you asked for in most cases.
Is it safe to compress private videos here?
Yes. Your video is never uploaded: it is read and processed by your own browser. Our Content Security Policy only allows the page to talk to vidmini.com for its own code, and no tracking cookies are used.
