Fast mode: lossless and near-instant
By default, Vidmini trims a video without re-encoding it. The compressed video and audio data between your start and end points is copied as-is into a new file. Because nothing is decoded and compressed again, the result is bit-for-bit the same quality as the original, and even a long 4K recording is trimmed in a few seconds. The page shows “Lossless: no re-encoding” when this is the case.
The output keeps the container of your source: an MP4 stays an MP4, a MOV stays a MOV, and the same goes for WebM and MKV. That means an iPhone video trimmed here still opens in Photos, QuickTime or any editor exactly like the original did.
Key frames, explained simply
Compressed video does not store every frame as a full picture. Every so often it saves a complete image, called a key frame. The frames in between only describe what changed since the previous one. A phone typically writes one key frame every second or two; screen recordings and some exports space them further apart.
This is why fast mode has one limitation: a clip copied without re-encoding has to begin on a key frame, otherwise the first frames would have nothing to build on. So the start of your trim snaps back to the previous key frame. In practice, your clip may begin a fraction of a second, or occasionally a couple of seconds, before the moment you picked. The end point is not affected in the same way.
Frame-accurate mode: exact cuts when they matter
If your clip must start on an exact frame, for example the first word of a sentence or the beat of a song, check “Frame-accurate cut”. Vidmini then decodes the selected part and re-encodes it, so the new file can start precisely where you asked.
Re-encoding takes longer than copying and, like any compression, it slightly changes the image. On a modern device with hardware encoding the difference is rarely visible, but for a quick cut of a long recording, fast mode is usually the better choice.
Private and without limits set by us
Most online video cutters upload your file to a server first. Vidmini reads and processes the video inside your browser, using the WebCodecs API and WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account and no watermark, and once the page has loaded it even works offline.
There is no size limit set by us: the result is streamed to your browser’s private storage, so desktop browsers handle files of several gigabytes. On phones, free memory and storage decide how large a file you can trim. After trimming, “Continue with this file” sends the clip straight to another tool, such as compression or GIF creation, without selecting the file again.
Frequently asked questions
Does trimming a video reduce its quality?
Not in fast mode. The video and audio are copied without re-encoding, so the trimmed clip has exactly the same quality as the original. Frame-accurate mode re-encodes the video, which causes a small, usually invisible, loss.
Why does my clip start slightly before the point I chose?
In fast mode, a clip can only start on a key frame, a full image stored every second or so in the video. The start snaps to the previous key frame, so a short moment before your chosen point may be included. Use frame-accurate mode if you need the exact frame.
Which formats can I trim?
MP4, MOV (including iPhone videos), M4V, WebM and MKV, with codecs your browser can decode such as H.264, HEVC, VP9 or AV1. The trimmed file keeps the container of the source. AVI, WMV and FLV files also work: they are first converted on your device by a built-in fallback, which is slower and downloads a 32 MB converter the first time.
Can I trim a video on my phone?
Yes. Vidmini works in the latest Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on Android and iPhone. The sliders and the current-frame buttons make it easy to set precise points on a small screen.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and cut by your own browser. The page is only allowed to talk to vidmini.com to load its own code, and no tracking cookies are used.
Can I remove a part from the middle of a video?
The trim tool keeps one continuous section between a start and an end point. To make a video smaller after trimming, use “Continue with this file” and send the clip to the compressor.
