What you get: 16-bit PCM WAV
WAV stores audio as raw PCM samples, with no compression at all. Vidmini decodes the audio track of your MP4, usually AAC, and writes it as 16-bit PCM, the same bit depth as an audio CD. Every sample is stored as-is, so the file opens instantly in any editor and nothing is lost when you cut, mix or process it.
Keep in mind that WAV does not restore detail that the source never had. The audio inside an MP4 is compressed; the WAV is an exact, uncompressed copy of what that compressed audio decodes to, which is the best possible starting point for further work.
When WAV is the right choice
Audio editing and music production: DAWs such as Audacity, Reaper, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, FL Studio or Pro Tools work natively with WAV. Editing a WAV and exporting once at the end avoids stacking several rounds of lossy compression.
Transcription and speech recognition: many transcription tools and speech-to-text engines accept WAV directly or even prefer it, because there is no decoding step and no compression artefact. Video editors and sound designers also use WAV to re-sync or clean up the dialogue of a clip.
If you just want to listen to the audio or send it to someone, MP3 is a better fit: the same MP4 to WAV tool can output MP3 at 128 to 320 kbps.
File size: plan for big files
Uncompressed audio is large. Stereo 16-bit audio at 48 kHz, the usual rate in phone and camera videos, takes about 11.5 MB per minute, roughly 690 MB per hour. The same minute as MP3 at 192 kbps is about 1.4 MB. So a WAV can easily be bigger than a short MP4 video it came from.
That is not a problem on a computer: there is no size limit set by us, and the output is streamed to your browser’s private storage, so hour-long recordings work on desktop browsers. Frequently asked questions
Is MP4 to WAV lossless?
The step from the MP4’s audio to WAV adds no loss: the decoded audio is written uncompressed as 16-bit PCM. The original audio track in the MP4 is usually AAC, which is already lossy, and a WAV cannot bring back what was removed there.
Why is my WAV file so much bigger than the MP4?
Because WAV is uncompressed. Stereo audio at 48 kHz in 16-bit takes about 11.5 MB per minute, while the video file stores its audio compressed at a fraction of that. It is normal, and the size is the price of lossless editing.
Which programs open the WAV file?
Practically all of them: Windows Media Player, QuickTime, VLC, Audacity, GarageBand, Logic Pro, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and every DAW. WAV is the most widely supported uncompressed audio format.
Can I convert a MOV or WebM to WAV with this tool?
Yes. Despite its name, the tool reads MP4, MOV (including iPhone videos), M4V, WebM and MKV, as long as your browser can decode the audio.
Is WAV better than MP3 for transcription?
WAV avoids any extra compression, which some transcription services recommend. In practice a 192 kbps MP3 also transcribes well; choose WAV when the service asks for it or when you will edit the audio first.
Is there a watermark or a length limit?
