Why convert MOV to MP4?
MOV is the QuickTime container used by Apple: iPhones, iPads, Macs and screen recordings made with QuickTime Player all save MOV files. They play fine on Apple devices, but Windows apps, Android phones, smart TVs, some websites and many upload forms expect MP4.
MP4 and MOV are close relatives: both are containers that hold a video track and an audio track. Changing the container is often all it takes to make a MOV file accepted everywhere. When the codecs inside also need to change, Vidmini re-encodes them to H.264 video and AAC audio, the most widely supported combination.
H.264 MOV: instant and lossless
Many MOV files already contain H.264 video and AAC audio, for example videos exported from older iPhones, cameras or editing apps. In that case Vidmini does not re-encode anything: it copies the video and audio streams as they are into an MP4 container. The page shows "Lossless: no re-encoding" when this happens.
A stream copy is limited mostly by how fast your device can read and write the file, so even long videos are converted in seconds, with exactly the same picture and sound quality as the original.
iPhone videos in HEVC and HDR
Recent iPhones record in HEVC (H.265) by default, often in HDR (Dolby Vision). HEVC saves space, but many Windows PCs, older Android phones, TVs and websites cannot play it. For maximum compatibility, Vidmini re-encodes HEVC video to H.264 while converting to MP4, using the hardware encoder of your device when the browser offers one.
HDR footage may look slightly faded or less vivid after this re-encoding, because Vidmini does not apply tone-mapping yet. If colors matter a lot, you can switch the iPhone camera to "Most Compatible" in Settings > Camera > Formats before filming: it records H.264, which Vidmini then converts to MP4 losslessly.
Decoding HEVC requires support in your browser. Most recent devices have it; Chrome and Edge offer the widest codec support.
Private by design, and no size limit set by us
Vidmini reads and converts your MOV file inside the browser, using the WebCodecs API and WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account and no watermark. Once the page has loaded, it even works offline.
We do not set a file size limit. The MP4 is streamed to your browser’s private storage as it is produced, so desktop browsers handle files of several gigabytes. On phones, the practical limit depends on free memory and storage.
After converting, "Continue with this file" lets you compress, trim or turn the MP4 into a GIF without selecting the file again.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting MOV to MP4 lose quality?
Not when the MOV already contains H.264 video and AAC audio: the streams are copied without re-encoding, so the MP4 is identical in quality. HEVC videos are re-encoded to H.264, which changes the file slightly; at the original resolution the difference is usually hard to see.
Can I convert iPhone videos?
Yes. MOV files from iPhones and iPads are supported, including HEVC recordings, as long as your browser can decode HEVC (most recent devices can). On an iPhone you can convert directly in Safari: pick the video from your photo library and download the MP4.
Why do my HDR videos look washed out after conversion?
HDR video uses a wider range of brightness and colors than standard H.264 output. Vidmini does not tone-map HDR yet, so re-encoded HDR clips can look slightly faded. Recording in "Most Compatible" mode avoids the issue.
Why was my conversion so fast?
Your MOV file already contained codecs that MP4 supports, so Vidmini copied them instead of re-encoding. That is why the page shows "Lossless: no re-encoding".
Can I convert MOV to MP4 on Windows?
Yes. Vidmini runs in the latest Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Windows, as well as Safari on Mac. Chrome and Edge offer the widest codec support, which helps with HEVC files.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is processed by your own browser. Our Content Security Policy only lets the page talk to vidmini.com for its own code, and no tracking cookies are used.
