Why selfie videos look reversed

When you film yourself with the front camera, the phone shows you a mirror image, because that is what people are used to seeing in a mirror. Depending on the phone and the app, the saved video is sometimes mirrored too, and sometimes not. Either way, one version ends up looking "wrong": a logo on your T-shirt reads backwards, a sign behind you is reversed, or your hair parting is on the unexpected side.

Flip Video mirrors the picture horizontally so left becomes right. Use it to make text readable again, to match a clip to the rest of your footage, or simply to get the version you saw on screen while recording. It also helps with screen recordings made through a mirror, dance tutorials that should face the viewer, and webcam footage from software that mirrors by default.

Flip versus rotate

Flipping and rotating are different operations. Rotating turns the whole picture around its centre, like turning a photo on a table; flipping reflects it, like looking in a mirror. If your video is lying on its side, you need Rotate Video. If it is the right way up but reversed left to right, you need Flip Video.

Need an upside-down, mirror-image result, also called a vertical flip? Combine "Mirror horizontally" with a 180° rotation in the same pass: mirroring left to right and then turning the picture upside down gives exactly a top-to-bottom flip.

What happens to quality and sound

A mirror image cannot be stored as a simple flag in the file, so Vidmini decodes every frame, mirrors it and re-encodes the video with your browser's WebCodecs encoder, using the hardware encoder of your device when available. Re-encoding involves a small generation loss, which is rarely visible at normal viewing sizes.

The audio is not mirrored: sound has no left-to-right picture to reverse, and your voice and music play exactly as before. Very long or high-resolution videos take longer to flip than to rotate, because every frame is processed; a modern laptop handles a few minutes of 1080p video comfortably.
