An ezgif alternative that keeps your videos on your device

ezgif describes itself as a free, simple toolset designed primarily for creating and editing animated GIFs. It says it is completely free, commercial use is allowed and no attribution is required. Its video to GIF and GIF to MP4 pages state that no watermark is added. For some formats it writes "Created with ezgif.com" into the file's Software or Comment metadata, which you may delete. The site is funded by advertising: its privacy page says cookies are used to serve ads.

Most ezgif tools work by uploading your file to its servers. The video to GIF page lists a maximum file size of 200 MB and says uploaded files are deleted automatically one hour after upload; the privacy page says files are kept up to one hour after they were last used. To keep processing reasonable, the length you can turn into a GIF depends on the frame rate: up to 60 seconds at 5 fps, 30 seconds at 10 fps, and less at higher rates. Some newer ezgif tools, such as its bulk GIF optimizer and screen recorder, run directly in the browser.

Where ezgif is the better choice

ezgif is much broader when it comes to animated images. It offers a GIF maker from separate images, a GIF optimizer and target-size compressor, text and effects on GIFs, frame splitting, a video reverser, and converters for WebP, APNG, AVIF, JXL, MNG, Lottie and many other formats. Vidmini has none of these image editors: it is focused on video and audio files.

ezgif can also take a file from a direct URL, and it lets you turn up to a minute of video into a GIF at a low frame rate. Vidmini's GIF tool makes clips of 2 to 15 seconds, 320 to 800 pixels wide, at 10 to 20 fps. If you need to fine-tune an existing GIF frame by frame, ezgif remains the more complete tool.

Where Vidmini is the better choice

Privacy is the main difference. Vidmini processes every file inside your browser with WebCodecs and WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded, there is nothing to delete from a server afterwards, and once the page is loaded it keeps working offline. The page uses no tracking cookies, and its Content Security Policy only lets it talk to vidmini.com for its own code.

There is no file size limit set by us. Results are written to your browser's private storage, so desktop browsers handle videos of several gigabytes; phones are limited by their free memory and storage. Formats that need the fallback converter, such as an animated GIF going to MP4, accept up to 1 GB. There is no account and no watermark, and because nothing travels over the network, a large video does not have to be uploaded before the work starts.

Vidmini also goes further on the video side: compress to an exact size in MB, crop to 9:16 or 1:1, change speed from 0.25× to 4×, export JPEG or PNG frames at full resolution, and pass the result to the next tool with "Continue with", without selecting the file again.

Which one should you use?

For editing GIFs, WebP or APNG animations themselves, ezgif is the natural pick. For turning your own videos into GIFs, preparing a clip for social media or shrinking a file you would rather not upload, Vidmini does the job on your device.
