Why is my MP4 file so big?
MP4 is only a container: the box that holds the video and audio streams. Its size is decided by the bitrate inside, not by the format itself. Android phones, action cameras and drones record MP4 at high bitrates so that the footage survives editing, and 4K or 60 fps doubles or quadruples the amount of data. A few minutes of phone video can easily weigh several hundred megabytes.
Exports are another common cause. Video editors often default to a high-quality preset meant for archiving, and screen recorders save every frame at full resolution. The picture would look almost the same at a fraction of the size, which is exactly what compression gives you back.
MP4 in, MP4 out
Vidmini writes the compressed file as an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, the most widely supported combination there is. It keeps the same extension as your original and plays in the same places: phones, browsers, TVs, WhatsApp, Discord, email clients and every video editor. You can swap the heavy file for the light one without anything breaking.
Some recent Android phones record MP4 with HEVC (H.265) instead of H.264. HEVC needs fewer bits for the same picture, so a small saving on such a file can cost more detail than you expect. Set a clearly lower target, or cap the resolution at 1080p or 720p, to get a real gain.
Compress to an exact size, or by quality
In target-size mode, Vidmini reads the duration of your MP4, calculates the bitrate that fits your budget and keeps a small margin for the container. If the first result still overshoots, it runs one corrective pass on its own. When the budget is too small for the current resolution, it lowers the resolution automatically, because 720p with enough bits looks better than blocky 1080p.
In quality mode, you choose between "High quality", "Balanced" and "Smallest file", and the size follows. Screen recordings and slides compress remarkably well because most of the picture does not move; fast sports or handheld footage needs more bits to stay sharp.
Private and local, even for large MP4 files
Everything runs in your browser with the WebCodecs API and your device's hardware encoder. The MP4 is never uploaded, so you don't wait for a transfer, and the page keeps working if you go offline after it has loaded. There is no size limit set by us: the output is streamed into the browser's private storage, so desktop browsers handle multi-gigabyte files. On phones, free memory and storage set the practical limit.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller can an MP4 get?
It depends on how it was recorded. Phone, camera and screen-recording files often shrink to a quarter of their size or less with little visible difference. An MP4 that was already heavily compressed, such as a file downloaded from a streaming or social site, has little left to remove: pushing it much lower will show.
Does compressing an MP4 twice make it worse?
Yes, each re-encode loses a little detail. Always start from the original file rather than from an already compressed copy, and pick the target you actually need in one go.
Will the compressed file still be an MP4?
Yes. The result is an .mp4 file with H.264 video and AAC audio, so it opens anywhere the original did, and usually in more places if the original used HEVC.
Can I compress an MP4 for email or Discord?
Yes. Use the 25 MB preset for a typical email attachment. For a free Discord account, set the slider just under 20 MB, or open the Compress for Discord tool, which targets that by default. If the video is long, trimming it first leaves more quality for the part you keep.
What happens to the sound?
The audio is re-encoded to AAC at a bitrate between 64 and 128 kbps, chosen to fit your target. Speech and music stay clear at these rates. If you only need the sound, the MP4 to MP3 tool is a better fit.
Is my MP4 uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and processed by your own browser. Our Content Security Policy only lets the page talk to vidmini.com for its own code, and no tracking cookies are used.
